How to prepare for UGC NET Exam-Tips and Tricks

National Eligibility Test (NET), also called UGC NET, is an all-India test conducted by the UGC as the eligibility for college and university level lectureship and for the award of Junior Research Fellowship. UGC NET is available for a variety of subjects. Clearing this exam is a dream for many aspirants across the country. Familiarizing with some tips and tricks will help them perform better in the coming exam this year. If you have applied for the UGC NET, then the following tips will surely be useful for you.
Like in every other exam, knowing the syllabus is the most important thing that is to be considered. The exam is conducted in two sessions with the Paper 1 containing questions to test your aptitude and general awareness and the Paper 2 consisting of the subject concerned. Know the syllabus thoroughly, because this will help you know what to study and what not to. This in turn saves time and effort. You can download the syllabus from the UGC website and start preparing for each topic. After understanding the syllabus, take your books early and manage your time to be spent for studies. Start your preparation three to six months prior to the exam and this will help you greatly in deciding how much portion of time should be divided for each topic. Study regularly with a time table and set a daily target for your studies. The next step is to acquire previous year question papers which are available in different websites and you can also get solved papers in the form of books from stores. Start solving previous papers and this will give you the confidence to face any question in the exam. The exam is of three hours duration and you have to go through all the 150 questions, 50 general aptitude and 100 subject-specific questions. You have to practice a lot solving a lot of papers to be efficient. Only when you try solving more hard questions, you will be able to manage your time. While you start studying, always carry a small notebook with you and write the main things in this note as compressed as possible with no points lost. Writing notes help remember things easily as well as these notes serve as capsules of your subject. Once you take a look into the notes just before the exam, you get an easy grasp of the topics you studied. Try to solve as many mock tests as possible along with your studies. Allot some time for solving mock tests in your time tables. Know your weak areas and plan your strategies accordingly. In the exam hall, you need to be quick and precise. Attempt even the questions for which you don’t know the answer, because you are lucky that there is no negative marking for the wrong answers. The NET is conducted twice in every year with a view to ensure more candidates to achieve their dream of becoming lecturers and researchers. So, if one couldn’t crack this test in first attempt, if he has brief determination, then there is high probability for him/her to clear the test the next time. What are the criteria to become a government lecturer after clearing NET

In spite of the constant trend of aspiring to become doctors or engineers, being a lecturer has always been an alluring dream for many among the youth of our nation. For those aiming a career as a lecturer in government institutes, it is required to clear two tests. The eligible candidates are those who have completed post-graduation in the respective subjects with an aggregate percentage of at least 55%. The two important tests that the aspirants should clear are the UGC/CSIR National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted twice a year by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the competitive exam conducted by the Public Service Commissions of respective states for the recruitment to the posts of lecturers in specific disciplines from time to time. If you have completed post-graduation with the requisite marks and cleared NET, then you are eligible to become a lecturer in colleges across India. Lecturers in Government colleges have the advantage of having a secure job, good payments and easy and flexible working atmosphere.Once you clear the NET, you are eligible to be a lecturer. If you prefer a job in government colleges, you have to wait for the public service commission (PSC) to release notification for the recruitment of the lecturer in your particular subject to various government colleges across the state. Apply for the post through the official portal of the PSC and start preparing for the test. The objective test conducted for lecturer recruitment comprises of 70% of the questions from the respective subject, and the rest to test your General knowledge and teaching aptitude. You can easily clear the exam if you have mastery over your subject and a little GK. You have already cracked a hard nut in the form of the NET, so this exam is probably easy for you. When your mark for the test exceeds beyond the cut-off mark, as calculated by the PSC, you will be selected in the main list for the recruitment and will be called for a personal interview. The interview date will be stipulated by the PSC and the interview board comprises of members of the commission and an expert in the subject in which you are aspiring lectureship. They examine your communication skills, behavior, and most importantly, your knowledge in the subject. After the interview, a rank list will be published by the Commission and candidates will be selected from the list to fill the vacancies reported in different government colleges across the state. When there are more vacancies, more candidates will be selected for appointment and they will be appointed as assistant professors in government colleges with all the privileges for government employees. There is no maximum number of attempts for UGC NET. However, for Junior research fellowship (JRF), only three attempts are allowed.


For the JRF post, the upper age limit is 30 years (general category) while the Assistant professor post doesn’t have any age limit. .


In order to clear the NET, a candidate belonging to the general category should secure 40% of the total aggregate marks in both the papers taken together and candidates belonging to reserved categories should secure 35% aggregate marks.


Candidates who qualify NET are eligible for lectureship. If they have qualified NET-JRF, they will get the opportunity to do research in prestigious institutions and they will be paid a monthly stipend for a period of two years.


There’s no negative marking in UGC NET.


The application fee to apply for UGC NET is ₹ 1000 for general category candidates, ₹500 for OBC category is /- and ₹250 for SC/ST/PWD/Transgender candidates.


For the award of JRF, UGC NET certificate holds valid for three years from the date of issue. While for lectureship, the certificate has lifetime validity.

Candidates who are pursuing Master’s degree or equivalent courses or those who are awaiting the result of the final examination can appear for the UGC NET.


There exists no ranking scheme in UGC NET. You can only check the marks obtained in the test. A separate merit list will be created from among the NET qualified candidates for awarding JRF.


NTA conducts the UGC NET in the months of June and December every year.
